Welcome to West Butterwick
St Marys Church was completed in 1841. It stands on the site of former chapels going back to the 16th century at the very heart of the village. Surrounded by the churchyard it is bordered on one side by North Street which runs parallel to the tidal River Trent.
Next door literally is West Butterwick Methodist Church with whom St Marys enjoys close ties. West of the Church and with direct access is the Primary School which is a church school and whose staff and pupils regularly make use of St Marys.
The North Street entrance is by a short flight of steps and a path to the church door situated at the western end of the building. The path continues on a level plain to West Street opposite the village Shop and Post Office (currently under threat of closure).
A main feature of the Church is the clock tower which provides a vital service to the village and since the Millennium is floodlight at night.
St Marys is fully accessible form the West Street entrance and a portable ramp is kept in the church porch. Large print service books are also available.
SERVICES
These are currently held every Sunday at 9am.
The current arrangement is for Holy Communion with hymns, readings and a sermon or presentation is made.
Since the adoption of New Era decentralised management in 2005 the Axholme Deanery to which west Butterwick belongs as part of the Epworth group of churches arranges a Deaary Service whenever a 5th Sunday occurs. This service rotates around the 11 churches in the Deanery.
Services follow a traditional pattern with time for reflection, prayer and contemplation, everyone is welcome.
