Prayers

Prayer Page

This is the special ‘collect' prayer for Pentecost Sunday.

God, who at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Prayers for different situations

A Morning Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for bringing us safely to the beginning of this new day.  Keep us from all wrong-doing and danger.  Walk with us on our path, and guide us to do what is right.  Keep in safety those we love, and may your blessing rest upon us always.  Amen

An Evening Prayer:

Visit our home, O Lord, we pray, and drive from it all danger, sadness and fear.  May your holy angels dwell with us, guard us and give us peace, and may your blessing be always upon us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

A Prayer for those who are ill:

Loving God, we pray for those whose lives are hard and painful, or whose existence is sorrowful, bitter or empty;  remembering in particular ......  In their need may they know your healing touch, reaching out to comfort and strengthen them.  We pray too, for all who care for others with love and selflessness.  Amen.

A Prayer for those who have died:

Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: shed forth, we pray,  upon your whole Church in paradise and on earth the bright beams of your light and heavenly comfort; and grant that we, following the good example of those who have loved and served you here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into the fullness of your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

A Prayer for those who mourn:

Gracious God, surround us, and all who mourn with your continuing compassion.  Do not let grief overwhelm us, or turn us against you.  When grief seems never-ending, take us one step at a time along the road to the resurrection, in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Prayer of Saint Richard of Chichester:

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for all the benefits that you have won for us, for all the pains and insults that you have borne for us.  Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day.  Amen.
