  APRIL PATTERNS OF WORSHIP

 Philippines Mission 2012

First of all I must thank everyone for their support for my continual involvement in the Harelip and Cleft Palate Medical Mission to the Philippines under the direction of Mending faces.

This multi -national team come together each year to make a difference to the impoverished people of the Philippines who would have little opportunity for such a life changing surgery. The group this year went to San Jose which is in the province of Antique, an area I had not visited before, but in the run-up to the trip I was informed that this was a very poor hospital. The theatres had recently undergone a lot of renovation and upgrade as compared to the sorry poor state of the wards.

I was greatly impressed with the nursing staff who worked under very difficult conditions. The qualified nurses are not guaranteed

employment when they graduate and can work for 2 years as volunteers before a job is available; even then the wage is not great. The Filipino acted as translators and helped me in the care of their people. One nurse ‘AU AU' was particularly helpful.

We were able to operate on 81 persons and did 84 procedures. After arriving on the Saturday, (no time for jet lag) we were straight into assessments and scheduling for the surgery events on the Sunday. Also on the Sunday the rooms and theatres were set up for the following day, this was quite a co-ordinated event as we were planning to run 4 theatre tables in 2 very small theatres so that we would be able to make as much use of the time we had available.

The working day started at 7.00 with ward rounds, and surgery planned from 8.00 and continued all day with the last child of the day being returned to the ward by 7.30. These were long days for us, and for the worried parents they must have been quite frightening. Most of these parents had no experience of any hospitals and so they were at times quite bewildered.

Most of the surgery we performed was work on the harelips and the children's faces were transformed by these artistic and gifted surgeons. With the financial aid from the Spilsby supports and friends, we were able to sponsor Kevin and Kelvin, mischievous 4 year old twin boys.

As part of the English team, there are 6 of us who hail from the Boston area, we were able to offer financial support to the local hospital  and were able to buy, ceiling fans, Fluorescent wall mounted bug killers ( to be erected in the kitchen and the paediatric wards) wheelchairs x6, fold-up beds x26 and mattresses for the cots. These gifts will make a huge difference to the patients care.

On behalf of the children thank you once more for your prayers and support.

Love Jean

St Mary's Church, Hundleby Jubilee Project

In the next few months the country will be turned into a sea of red, white and blue, heralding the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, which will be followed by the excitement of the London Olympics

At the same time splashes of colour will transform a quiet corner of St. Mary'sinto a welcoming space where children can enjoy stories and activities, music making and fun with friends.

If you would like to help with this venture we would be delighted to receive donations of soft toys, story books, games, jigsaw puzzles and sets for constructive play that are no longer required and are still in good condition.

Please get in touch with Jenny Williams, tel: 01790 752208 and collection can be arranged.

SATURDAY COFFEE MORNINGS

Some more people have said they will help with the coffee mornings on Saturdays ,from 10.00 - 12.00 in St James Church, so it is hoped to hold them each week.

A rota will be put at the back of the Church and the first one will be on May 5th.  Coffee/tea and cake £1.50.

We look forward to meeting up once again for a drink and a chat.  £1000 was raised towards Church funds last year and the September takings go to the Flower Fund.
