Chancel Refurbishment at Christchurch - November 2013
On Sunday 24th November 2013 we used the refurbished Chancel at Christchurch for the first time. The old altar was a very large, imposing peice of furniture, designed to be fully covered with Altar Frontals. Over the years our frontals had become worn and water damaged and so the PCC decided that a bare polished wood altar would be more suitable.
Our friends at Billingborough Church were looking after the original Communion Table and chairs from BIllingborough Methodist Church and their PCC kindly agreed, in early 2013, to loan these to Christchurch.
Discussion & planning commenced, resulting in the old blue carpet and "rug" being removed along with the original altar. Investigation then found the wooden supports for the floorboards were rotten, and so a new section of boarding, along with supporting timbers was installed as well as a plynth for the altar.
What then followed was several weeks of sanding, staining and varnishing - with the result that our refurbished Chancel is ready for Rev'd Christine Pocock to be the first to use. Christine is (most appropriately) a retired Minister of the Methodist Church!
